Our position
The Homeowner Guide does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising (also called targeted advertising). We do not use advertising cookies, ad networks or marketing trackers. This has been true since the site launched, and we will update this page and our privacy policy before that could ever change.
We still provide this page because privacy laws in several US states give you the right to opt out, and because you should be able to make privacy requests easily.
What personal information we have
We only have personal information you choose to send us:
- Contact form or email: your name, email address, topic and message.
- Newsletter: your email address and language preference.
Our host, Cloudflare, processes IP addresses and request logs to deliver and secure the site. If you accept analytics, Cloudflare Web Analytics provides us with aggregate information without using cookies to track individuals. Full details are in our privacy policy and cookie policy.
Your rights
Residents of states with consumer privacy laws, including California (CCPA/CPRA), Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and others, may have the right to:
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising.
- Know and access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct personal information that is inaccurate.
- Delete personal information we hold about you.
- Not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
We honor these requests from all readers, whichever state you live in.
Global Privacy Control
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a setting in some browsers and browser extensions that tells websites you do not want your personal information sold or shared. We honor GPC signals as a valid opt-out request. If your browser sends one, you do not need to do anything else to opt out on this site. You can learn whether your browser supports GPC in its privacy settings.
How to make a request
Email with the subject line “Privacy request.” In your message, please tell us:
- What you are asking for: opt out, access, correction or deletion.
- The email address you used with us, for example to subscribe to the newsletter or send a message.
- Your state of residence, if you wish; this helps us apply the right law, but we will handle your request either way.
Please do not send sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, financial account details or copies of identity documents. We do not need them.
How we verify your request
Because the only personal information we hold is linked to an email address, we verify requests by email. We will reply to the address connected to the information, and ask you to confirm the request from that address. This protects you from someone else requesting or deleting your information.
Authorized agents
If someone is making a request on your behalf, such as an authorized agent under California law, they should say so in the email. We may ask for proof that they are authorized and ask you to confirm the request directly from your email address.
When we respond
We respond to verified requests within 45 days. If we need more time, as permitted by law, we will tell you why. If we cannot fulfill part of a request, for example because we must keep a record to comply with the law, we will explain. If you disagree with our decision, reply to our email to appeal and we will review it again.
Unsubscribing from the newsletter
You do not need a formal request to stop receiving emails. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link. To also delete your address from our list, email us with the subject “Privacy request.”
